December 3rd

Sunny day

But cold

But persistent Aleutian Low offshore about to send us a system – Rain? Or Snow?

Interesting how large the ice crystals able to grow ---

Hoar Frost lasts until the sun able to melt it away

But conscientiously cleaned it up – including help from RCMP to cordon off street – as glass shards covered street near intersection with McBride

Dump truck spills it load

Shopping carts

About 3 guys from nearby grocery store, pulling shopping carts up from over the drop off near the Recycling refund store on 2nd  13 carts pulled up – and another 10 to go--- Street people tend to use the carts for returning empty bottles for refund– and then others throw the abandoned carts over the rail – a garbage bag of cans etc will get maybe a few dollars (if lucky) but the shopping carts worth around 300$ --- something does not make sense here – but again it is mainly poverty that is the ‘real cause’

At this point most is just ‘promises’ – but the project is just beginning and will be years before a tanker ever takes oil from Kitimat – though condensate tankers presently going up Douglas Channel

Enbridge Project --Marine Safety

It was the people that made it interesting --- here Captain Chris A was an experienced Tanker deep sea captain who brings years of experience to helping Enbridge

This is from the BC Pilotage ‘exhibit’ at Enbridge forum

The pilots were quite positive that they have experience etc to take ships up to Kitimat in all kinds of weather etc – their main point to me seemed to be that they are presently taking all kinds of very large vessels to ports along the BC coast with no accidents – thus the large coal ships coming into PR harbour are on same order of size as the larger of the oil tankers etc

Model of Enbridge Kitimat terminal

Note the size of the tankers – Suezmax and VLCC --- --- 2 reserves close to Kitimat terminal – as below

Bottom line

There will be lots of chances over next few years to assess and comment on Enbridge plans for shipping oil from Kitimat --- while Enbridge will not control the oil once leaves the terminal – they are promising that they will not ‘load’ ships that are not double hulled and meeting the most rigorous marine safety standards (as certified by independent 3rd parties etc)

Tomorrow more on City Council etc
