December 2nd

Enbridge consultation

Northern Gateway proposal

Good Presentation

And the web site is good too http://www.northerngateway.ca/

I was interested mainly in the marine aspects and will emphasize those here over the next 2 days

The best ‘news’ is that all tankers will be double hulled and tethered to a ‘super’ tug

Good brochure as PDF on their site

But this means lots of ballast water will be dumped into Kitimat etc waters

By 2010 all Tankers must be double hulled

See their material on Marine Plan/ Ships/Tugs etc

Image from panel at Enbridge exhibit

Presently Condensate tankers going to Kitimat – usually getting Pilot at Triple (TPL)

I spoke at length with BC Pilots

http://www.bccoastpilots.com/

As this pilotage page shows – presently ship’s pilots are boarded on ships at Triple and Pine Island

But when Oil Tanker ships transiting to Kitimat there will probably be a pilot station in Caamano Sound (in area below my ‘outside’ on map left)

Present routes from Triple in Red – thus via Principe Channel or ‘outside’ (in blue)

And note a new RADAR station planned for Gil Island – red map left)

From their brochure

Note how deep and wide Douglas Channel is --- and even Principe Channel is fairly deep, wide --- but doesn’t discuss the narrow parts

See Below)

This is from map above

Proposed radar station on North end of Gil Island has black line form original map

Note how Tankers coming out of Principe channel – or entering by alternate Caamano Sound route have to navigate past northern and western sides of Gil Island

The depths and widths of those channels not mentioned in the promotional materials

But a tug will be tethered to the Tanker by time gets there

From Enbridge Brochure

Similar exhibits were at the ‘showing’

Who will monitor the Radar station on Gil Island?– One would expect Vessel Traffic (VTS) in Prince Rupert – (remember there are presently no Radar facilities on the North Coast – for monitoring ship traffic – the Port of Prince Rupert is presently lobbying to have installed locally and regionally)

I will return to this topic tomorrow

I was given good Scottish model for monitoring environmental effects of ‘super oil Port’ there

Plus look again at Prince William Sound Citizen monitoring that happened after Exxon Valdez oil spill http://www.pwsrcac.org/
