Kathy Penney
and Doug Ford pitch the upside of Coal Bed Methane drilling in the Sacred
Headwaters |

A
power point presentation by Shell Canada reps – I see where they have been in
Smithers earlier in the week and the newspaper
article fairly well summarizes their presentation to PR City Council too |

‘Catastrophic
road failures |
|
Given
the high snow fall and large runoff (in spring 2007) last year spent fixing roads
etc (and fighting the Klabona
Keepers in Court etc—but that is another story) AUBC Law course (MS
Word doc) note especially the discussion on ‘fraccing’ (injecting
chemicals into the coal) – note too the court cases material and reasoning |

‘No

|
Wikipedia
has ‘neutral’ CBM
article with links etc – see their environmental
impacts section and the links there in Here is an
earlier West Coast Env Law look at Powder River CBM: again the
produced water, the density of development – but also the loss of aquifers
that will take centuries to re-charge And here is a CBM Citizen’s guide from WC Env Law

Won’t happen
like in Powder River area of Wyoming |
|
Powder
River is an example of worst CBM practices – Shell sees their being the only tenure
holder in Klappan – that all will be avoided – produced water during drilling
exploratory phases will be trucked away and treated (but see the
Environmental law & UBC discussions) |

Earth Justice ‘Powder River’ Wyoming CBM
web site – note the problem is the produced water |
Carelton
College (Montana) CBM educational
page – note the aerial photo of developed wells |
|
|
There is irony here
|
|
The
Smithers paper recounts how an audience member dared asked Penney & Ford
