Acidification
in Oceans – Problem?? |
|
Along
with increasing global temperatures cuased by rising CO2 levels in atmosphere
– the ocean is aborbing more – lowering the pH --- bad news for corals in
tropics – but what about plankton etc? Start with the Wiki article on ocean acidification It
has good links and references— See
the ICES workshop on acidification May 2007 PDF for
what is and not known – the graphic left from that article – shows increase
in aquaculture – experiments show mussel highly sensitive – but oyster isn’t
fussy when comes to lowered pH Here
is NOAAs CO2 acidification page
– with links to recent stories --- Off BC coast Ocean Station Papa will also monitor CO2 |

Topic suggested to me when reading Mesa Verde
Migrations – in recent American Scientist magazine Here is an online
MS Word
Doc that outlines the ‘complexity’ argument in Hamlets to Villages
‘progression’ Here is earlier Sci. American
reprint using computers etc to model the Mesa Verde population 800-1200 Here is excellent intro site
to pueblos –etc of Mesa Verde Mesa Verde Looking
beyond climate change -> ‘warfare and increasing
social complexity – recent article – site with annoying cookies but
unlike similar on NY Times has full story ‘free’ |
Dundas
Island compared to Mesa Verde |
|
As
I described yesterday Anne
Ruggles Master’s thesis argues site left was a ceremonial structure – not a
dwelling --- With time Dundas went from small hamlets to large villages – and
‘ceremonial’ functions transferred from (Kiva) to ‘chiefs’ dwelling In
Mesa Verde – they also went form small ‘pit houses’ to large masonry
structures – and then abandoned completely --- why is a much debated question
--- like Dundas , the larger sites could have been for ‘defence’ --- or it
could have been from just increasing social complexity --- I suspect both
arguments could be made for Dundas --- and perhaps similar time periods –
note ‘climate change (1300-1850) when temperatures got much colder may be
when ‘invaders’ came to Dundas |
