Parking study PR

Boulevard looks for public input

Which ranges from anger to boredom

·         Cow Bay area most ‘used’

·         Rushbrook Floats area solved by time study completed

·         Simple policy changes could solve ‘problem’

·         ‘Special interest groups’ will want ‘help’

·         VIP reason for study – and the wasted $$

(previous stories end of file)

Presentation (of sorts) and read the posters

There is an interesting story why this exercise was taking place – seems some local VIP (not to be confused with a mere Citizen) was trying to park downtown to get to work ---- all the public places on 3rd were filled --- ‘must be a problem’ – so City Council dutifully listens and responds (presentation probably in-camera)

See my previous where even at peak population no parking problem found in previous study

Merchants inevitably see parking as a problem to be solved by taxpayers--- Cow Bay merchants are in slightly different position (see below)

Problem??

The essence Boulevard’s presentation was maps like this – product of (hourly?) survey done in late May.  Results were color coded – my images lack resolution but you get the idea --- Note blue for Atlin lot

So Atlin lot is almost full every day (red below) – How will the Tourists be able to park? Especially on cruise Ship days?

Problem--- Atlin parking lot as best example

But surveyors kept tabs of cars that were actually parked in spaces when surveying – surprise – most the cars remained in the same space all day --- they were not ‘shoppers’ or tourists – but employees of surrounding shops (see my earlier where conclude same)

Parking Committee to have ‘open’ meetings?

Local users of the Rushbrook Floats area were angry that they had to pay – and that a special lot (w low actual usage) was reserved for ‘permit’ holders ---- That 30T$ earned with pay parking in only a few months and that all those trucks/ boat trailers disappeared from George Hills Way (contrast with last year), was not important to that group.

Special Interest groups

Predictions?

Special Interest groups will continue to rule PR

Cow Bay Parking is an issue that needs further study – Cow Bay businesses are supposed to provide parking for employees – but can pay a fee ‘in lieu of parking’ (2T$/ -- but only once and then presumably City will provide for next hundred years)

Previous

Earlier: key document: where previous study found no problem outlined --- But Cow Bay Merchants and Chamber of Commerce solicit Council to ‘study’ – Subsidize??

where pay parking promised and links to previous –and here for more general issue on parking study where nearly 3T ‘on street’ parking spaces found downtown

Still if Atlin ever sold then ‘Problem’ see my ’03 series on (then) future cruise ship docks—and may ’06 where City soliciting buyers for Atlin parking lot

See earlier where Rushbrook floats pay being installed
Citizen fined 300$ for illegal parking and this one which shows
