SQCRD meeting

November 23rd

Overview:  --- 1st of series

Land referrals  --- as metaphor

  Meta-narrative

At superficial level meeting dealt with

·         accountants report

·        land referrals (subdivisions)

·        grant requests

But on another level

·        firing Janet Beil

·        $$ for closing landfill (Janet)

·        demise forest industry

·        tourism as ‘future’

Image above is late item brought by Travis

Moresby Camp ca 1964

When logging = Jobs

From hub of logging industry on Moresby to a tourism ‘launch’ site

This item was added to original agenda package because funding applications paperwork would have to be done before next scheduled meeting.

Moresby Island Management Committee (MIMC) requested a motion from SQCRD so they would have support in their funding request to CST (Coast Sustainability Trust) to transform Moresby Camp into boat launch etc for tourism

(Read this newspaper item for background info dating from 2006 – Teal Jones; MIMC; and forestry decline etc

Teal Jones Group seeks sub-division of TFL lands

Map is Skidegate inlet/ channel area QCI
Darkened areas are lots owned by Teal Ceda
r

Teal bought TFL 47 in 1999 – some of the paperwork shows lands mortgaged to a bank

I have previously dealt with another of their applications to subdivide ‘forest lands’ into shore front housing tracts – cashing out?

3 different lots requested to be subdivided

Lot 1 was easiest dealt with – Ian Hetman said Graham Island Advisory group felt that since wanted to turn lot DL 2548 into a fishing lodge it required a zoning change before subdivision – others agreed

Lots 2, 3 approved

With conditions

DL 509 illustrates the problem (I have not shown the subdivisions here but intended to become 4 lots --- the concern was with access to Highway 16 – especially here where there is a curve (lower right) --- if each subdivided lot was to have a drive connection onto the highway it would have safety implications--- so while both lots approved it was conditional upon access roads being built where 2 subdivided lots used a common access road to get on- off property.

Next: Meta-narratives unravelled----

Or how an auditors report was ‘really’ an attempt to find vindication for firing Janet etc

(brought to you by same people that misplaced 5M$)

Land referrals are day in day out issues of Regional Districts

As you can see from above Director Ian Hetman has done his homework well – got good public input and others willingly followed his lead
