May 28th Meeting

Role of City Council explored

Community Awareness – sub-theme of meeting?

Contrast 2 community stressors and their Council member ‘advocates’---- Gambling vs EI --- Gordon-Pane vs Joy Thorkelson approach to warning community

Gambling got well done presentation by external spokespeople

EI got a numbing 15 minute monologue on data and numbers – signifying??

Imminent opening of Gambling facility made Gordon Payne ask why the promise made earlier to have Problem Gambling Councillors in PR was not being fulfilled --- and the presenters offered overview of potential problems and suggesting Civic role to steer around them

Is this ‘Community Awareness’?

Or Putting us to sleep?

Thorkelson approach

While her objective attained – letters sent by Council to various federal ministries etc --- she reached these goals by presenting a long winded ‘report’ that lasted as long as the Gambling presentation but with no support documentation or visuals (there is a 17 page document in information package handed out at meeting – lots of graphs etc but little/ no synthesis of information)

Mayor Pond was able to summarize this into 5 categories – but council chose to vote on them all as a package.

At some level this is a matter of Council ‘allowing’ Thorkelson to use Council for UFAWU priorities – but also ‘allowing’ a member to talk at length
