BC Hydro Presentation

Public Relations

Not sure why this presentation given – but generated some interesting discussion afterwards --- see below

Presentation graphics looked like 50% information and 50% public relations

See below for examples

BC Hydro web site useful

http://www.bchydro.com/

Mt Hays wind farm online by 2009 according to Cranmer presentation

Net importer? --- this graphic taken from web site

Presentation graphic

Conserving more – As in Power Smart

Buying more from independent power producers

Building more, either by investing in our heritage assets or investigating new resource options.—Say Site C dam

BC Hydro site has several good presentations etc – see link on home page called ‘Get the Facts’ for much of PR presentation with more info than given at council

The graphic below shows potential home savings – note lighting is most and means doing away with incandescent etc --- Appliances means using (38K PDF)

Clean OR Renewable Energy

The privatization of BC Hydro and the potential for IPPs etc is controversial stuff--- Will Site C Dam be owned and operated by BC Hydro or some ‘Private’ company?

(BC Hydro chair, in testimony BC Legislature, answered he did not know and that the paperwork says it will be decided by Cabinet when Site C officially proposed

-- here is document http://www.leg.bc.ca/cmt/38thparl/session-2/cc/hansard/c61205a.htm– search for terms)

The discussion for turning over public water rights to Private developers has been active since Hydro ‘Privatization’—see
http://www.citizensforpublicpower.ca/index.shtml

Facts or public relations spin (?)

It is ‘facts’ like these that make one wonder what the point of this presentation was--- when using per capita data – are we talking households’ energy use or total economy?
If total economy then almost pointless --- just means more smelting etc done than in Alberta --- what no Alcan in Alberta?

1T$ Check as part of BC Hydro  donations program --- Given for Animal Rehabilitation Center

Council Questions

Presentation generated some questions fro Council

Briglio asked about net importer – seems BC Hydro 90% energy from dams while Alberta uses coal and gas which tends to be constant flow --so cheaper to buy energy during slack times and store the water behind dams—then when high use – let water flow and sell/ export power – I could find no current info on amounts bought/ sold per year by http://www.powerex.com/

Briglio asked if making $$ on these transactions then why increase rates? --- Hydro guaranteed a constant rate of return on ‘its’ capital (>9% LG)

Council Questions

Thorkelson wanted to know how factored in low flows of rivers – While she mentioned ‘global warming’ --- Cranmer responded BC Hydro looks at possible 4 years of drought when ‘planning’

Goron-Payne and then Briglio asked about help available to smaller power producers as in the graphics – Cranmer answered it would be in way of expertise – and as yet not determined what that will mean in practice

Presumably both were referring to City’s attempt to use Schwatlans Lake water for power production as well as providing PR with water (see my story)
