Jennifer Wilson Presentation

Quality of Life Survey results

Product of 400+ peoples input

Community Engagement Report

The methodology seems to purposely seek out a wide community input – thus youth’s voices sought as well as 1st Nations and elderly etc

And many of the responses are presented either by age group or ethnicity

Outside it was snowing

Perhaps because it was such a ‘poor’ evening, Mayor Pond suggested everyone braving the weather to come to this presentation should have a chance to ask questions --- the addition of ‘citizens’ perspectives changed the dynamics of the meeting and made it more informative and enjoyable

Timelines

Thorkelson asked how public was going to input and when different projects would be completed – drafts available for public input in April- May

Back and forth between consultants doing and public commenting – seemed to move more towards public being involved in every step

Surprised me

Look at main concerns – number one being poverty and affordable housing --- you know this is not the usual ‘public’ input by ‘chamber of commerce’ types --- Good job Jennifer et al for listening to broader community

Even at this meeting a woman in audience spoke up for the land to be used by Edwards St development – she mentioned how local kids used this area as playground --- especially a gravel ‘hill’ that kids on bicycles used every day to make ‘jumps’ etc --- where will these guys go now?

Jargon

With Quality of Life survey over – now time to get down to land use inputs and decisions –

An interesting aside by Sea Austin: he asked if local ‘corporations’ would be involved in OCP ---- Pond answered that as individuals but not corporations --- which highlights our bias --- we could allow groups (corporations, churches, service groups etc) to input --- but our view of municipal politics sees only unaffiliated individuals as ‘real’

Iona Campanola gives to community

One of those commemorative plaques – this one for the christening(?) of BC Ferry Northern Adventure – which Iona thought would be best placed in PR City Hall chambers – and she gave to Mayor pond to bring back to Rupert
