Thorkelson vs 'Business' agenda

TILMA in question

Interesting exchanges

Thorkelson was lone voice on Council when came to questioning TILMA benefits --- At philosophic level others see ‘free market’ as a good thing while Joy comes from ‘social justice’ perspective that would have ‘free market’ regulated for public  --- While she mentioned Burnaby Council study – here are several links she implied
Georgia Straits legal critique----- Council Canadian Page w links
Saskatchewan Federation of Labour page links – includes Burnaby City Council used by Thorkelson

Conversation was precipitated by Rushton including TILMA in his MOU between Edmonton PG and PR on Economic Development – see below

Thorkelson thought such decisions should be left to Council ---

But she was lone voice

Jim Rushton Speaks

Announces the agreement between PR, PG and Edmonton – his discussion emphasized the potential which new container ship traffic at Rupert has for inducing manufacturing establishments aimed at Asian markets along the ‘western corridor’

A few sparks flew when he disagreed with Thorkelson comments

Pond scores a couple too

Several times during meeting Pond able to suggest a direction to get council out of a quandary – often of its own making --- thus on TILMA he suggested it was a matter best left for UBCM discussion --- and on the ‘Black Rooster’ re-zoning/ building permit he suggested a ‘way out’ – Peter Lester used to do that sort of thing well – not entering a ‘debate’ until the end – and then providing summary and exit strategy

Thorkelson vs Business agenda

Framing the debate

Because the others come from a pro business perspective – Thorkelson often 1 vote against rest – Bedard will vote with her on many ‘social issues’
the trick seems to be to present the question in terms of ‘community’  -- or wishes of the ‘neighbourhood’ ---  then others may go along – in passing Joy has become the ‘spokesperson’ for many 1st Nations issues – the food serving – But also sending a letter in recognition of Joseph Gosnell’s appointment as Companion to Order of Canada
