Poverty in PR

Causes: Personal vs structural?

Right wing emphasizes former

See previous where PR schools score among worst in BC

Even many progressives see ‘solution’ in terms of getting children to enjoy reading etc
But PR has most extreme income inequality in BC etc thus as this page (and previous EDI report fro Rupert—see links below) emphasizes the social dimension of poverty/ marginality

All these figs cut from EDI publication
Socio-economic  for North Coast  (8.8Meg PDF)

Much of the income is spent on housing --

These are 2001 data so more current data should reflect lower rents due to high vacancies – assuming market responded – which may not be true for welfare recipients

Low Income Cut off = LICO

These are the type terms used by spin doctors on right to avoid saying ‘below poverty line’ etc

Home Owning

People on the margins by definition are just hanging on – presumably the area called ‘Center’ has more apartments and presumably older housing

May 26th

The issue no one talks about – poverty in PR (story later) see  Social indicators BC Stats

Frser Institute report card on PR

Schools only one manifestation of extreme income inequality etc in PR

Poverty in PR  the forgotten issue

Provincial indicators of regional well being

I’ll update this file later – things only got worse in 2006 – rising to 7.1 in Sept

What is EDI saying about PR?

Hertman report 2004 Poverty  is ‘reason’ schools doing so poorly provincially

Socio-economic  for North Coast  (8.8Meg PDF)

Crime Strats in NW BC

I’ll update this soon – but older data implies PR better off than others in NW

I’d argue most our crime ‘poverty related
