‘Small is Beautiful’

It’s about the kids’

-- and not about saving $$

Good presentations and good community input to SD52 trustees

Perhaps the most significant moment of whole evening is when Robert Nelson of Metlakatla pledged their support in keeping Seal Cove School open

‘We were not consulted’ (Metlakatla student may have to move to Westview)

I will suggest below that ‘Conflict of Interest‘ by Wiens and Last leave board open to legal challenge

‘See you in court’ ???

A special place

Most of the public presentations spoke of warmth safety and protection of this ‘special place’ – between home and extended family – when I arrived kids were outside playing – at 6:45 PM

Sense of Cultural place

Note the Crest images of Coastal Tsimshian on the wall behind the trustees  – the other 2 crests were on facing wall

Cultural space --- most the students at Seal Cove are 1st Nations

Everyone stood as dancers exited their welcoming dance

‘We don’t own cars’ – how will children get to other schools safely?

Closing school shows our kids not valued

Seal Cove School has history

There has been a school in Seal Cove since 1913--- some parents and even grandparents of present generation attended Seal Cove

3Bs

New Commercial grade stove – preparing bag lunches for student lunches – here and across town

A community ‘Resource

Along with the EDI vulnerability index – introduced the concept of ‘grey area students’ – often poor broken homes etc – and how school was able to keep them in school etc --- plus resources like computer room used by wider community too

Here is the relevant section of the School act – conflict of interest

Bottom Line – conflict of interest

b) must not take part in the discussion of or vote on any question in respect of the matter, and(c) must not attempt in any way, whether before, during or after the meeting, to influence the voting on any question in respect of the matter.

Didn’t Last give an interview on TV after Kanata?

The Board has interpreted conflict narrowly – that they can vote on everything but the item in which they are in conflict – thus Wiens will abstain only on question of Seal Cove etc --- illegal  Find a judge
