Iona’s last visit to PR as Lt-Gov??

Very gracious person

But few attended reception

The upside of so few attending this official reception (other than more food selection) was that allowed an intimacy seldom seen at these kind of events – Iona made her way around the room (as we waited for more people to show up) and held a conversation with anyone who wished to talk – many knew her from when she lived here

Too bad – missed a great evening and a chance to speak with Iona

Baby Iona gets picture taken w Lt-Gov. Iona

Intimacy

Because so few attended Iona asked everyone to step closer for the speeches etc

See the PRDN article on Iona’s visit --- and Lt Gov web site --- she is a busy person – see  Schedule --- Speeches

And see how one is supposed to address Lt-Gov etc

Cultural connections

Dancing and official reception started the ceremonies – and apropos of cultural past, Iona mentioned in her speech that Government House has a connections with PR – seems 4 paintings in the hallway there were commissioned by Charles Melville Hays to hang in the never-built PR GTP Hotel--- the paintings languished in various archives until a previous Lt-Gov had them brought to Government House for public display

Navy was part of Honour Guard

The Commanding officer gave speech as part of ceremonies – he mentioned in passing that 2010 was their 100th birthday also – and perhaps should explore ways to combine the celebrations/ centennial

Navy ship anchored in Harbour

Cruise ship – navy vessel – tugs and fish boats – quintessential PR

Mayor Pond ‘Saves the day’

A local character appeared to want to ‘crash the party’ – this fellow with burette and bagpipes used to be a fixture in front of City Hall

When I came he was loudly arguing with Mayor Pond – who seems to have intercepted him before he had chance to enter

Pond Saves day

Pond’s strategy seemed to talk calmly to the fellow while slowly getting him to move away from the museum doorway --- but the farther away from doors the fellow was manoeuvred, the louder and angrier his voice got – some of us were going to call RCMP if it got any worse --- (luckily most the guests had not noticed) --- but then Mayor Pond returned to reception – later he said that when things were at loudest a group of ‘street people’ came by – though they themselves might have been mildly inebriated – they sized up the situation correctly --- ‘Hey, you leave him alone – he is the Mayor and he is our friend’ --- as there were three of them, ‘bagpipes’ decided to leave – and the situation which was almost to ‘crisis point’ instead evaporated – Pond did great job in diffusing situation – some would have just called the cops – which may have caused more problems than Pond’s approach
