23 July Council mtg

Public input provides the content

(down side is that often unfocussed and rambling )

Mayor Pond absent as was Gordon-Payne

Because it is summer

Most big issues wait until after vacations over – but this provides a ‘window’ for public groups to approach council with concerns that often over looked in busier times --- so Mt Hays, garbage, Tourist maps, and Acropolis Manor  moved into public view and discussion

Dave Konsmo and the future of Mt Hayes

Moving from the continued dumping of garbage on Wantage Road, even after Kaien Env Youth Society (KEYS) cleaned it last April --- to suggesting that access be denied to motorized vehicles – and then seeing a bright future for mountain as Eco-tourism --- Potential here but presentation too long and unfocused to gather Councils support – from a ‘regional park’ to a stakeholder forum – suggested

Peggy Davenport and the Future of Acropolis Manor (1)

Believes tearing down of the old Acropolis Manor ‘and turning it into a parking lot’ is ‘false economics’ and wasteful --- good discussion which I will return to later

90 Alpine Drive – again

Council had previously dealt with this but appears a mistake in calculations made --- generated at least one near by (absentee) property owner to object

Orange marks objectors Property

Presently not built upon --- the blue dash mark approximate area of proposed garage – which as Briglio pointed out could be built to 30feet high if attached to the house but because not attached must be 12 feet --- almost silly --- note too from same figure that looks like at least one house encroaches upon the absentee owners property (??) and the ---- dashed lines below suggest other properties built beyond their property lines into City (undeveloped) lane – interesting

A matter of Fairness

Why did CityWest become a Corporation: Mr Doug Jay suggested to me in conversation that when bought Cable company it went beyond PR boundaries – and thus needed to be regulated by someone other than the citizens of Prince Rupert --- example how would a person from Terrace deal with an ‘unfair billing’ etc

CityWest on hold

While this looked like a straight forward approval – questions from public (me) were taken up by Joy Thorkelson  and motion was tabled until Gordon Howie back so as to have a broader discussion of CityWest relation to City and Citizens

Vince A objects to Tourism map

The colourful map below given to every cruise ship tourist who wants to walk around PR – note the color coding w each area having its ‘uniqueness’ either as cultural , institutional ‘historic downtown etc – it was the latter that irritated speaker as his business was in green zone and thus appeared to be of little interest to Tourists

Not downtown core?

Briglio had a good evening – providing good analysis of some complex issues

Cities new ‘assistant’/ deputy (??) accountant Isabelle Hansen introduced by acting mayor Nelson Kinney

Some important issues only touched upon

I will return to this meeting later in week to develop some of the ideas suggested here
