NATURESea, land, river PEOPLESCommunity Demolish slum in 30 days?
|

If I were grading I Scores would be
similar as last meeting: ·
Thorkelson B+ ·
Briglio B ·
Gordon-Payne
C ·
Pond C ·
Kinney C ·
Bedard –
absent ·
Cote
absent And as in last
meeting Thorkelson provided most the ideas—Briglio the sound ‘2nd
thoughts’/ discussion |
|
|
Thorkelson
takes these meetings seriously – even reads the material etc |
|
While
the movement of Council towards ‘cleaning up’ PR – derelict cars – run down
buildings etc – and now giving notice to absentee landlord about 1021 2nd
Ave W was probably the most significant aspect of meeting (I will deal with
1021 in later page) ---- That was mainly a staff inititative and Council left
to ask questions (for benefit public) One
would expect the Casino liquor licence to be passed with minimal comment
(Pond business friendly position) ---
Joy worked towards getting a subsequent meeting (Sept 10th for
public input and Sept 17th for actual voting – after council/
public has chance to review
information --- Joy pointed out the census data and number of present number
of ‘capacity’ were not correct (applicant used 2001 census data—and listed
bars within 1 KM instead of 2 miles – former from accompanying map latte from
their written analysis ---- (more later) |

CAO report |
|
As
usual in these summer months the main ‘news’ was from staff reports: ·
Casino wants to open Sept 28th ·
Traffic consultants to give presentation on September 10th
at PAC ·
Green Task force w SD & College appointees & now
ready to go ·
Landfill discussion – fish offal & longer opening
hours etc |

Rural
Ridings & UBCM meeting ‘Equal isn’t
necessarily equable’ – Pond remembered Thorkelson remark at public meetings
of redistribution commission |
|
Going
to the UBCM meeting is a big deal for the Councillors – they were going to
have just one meeting in September to accommodate this ‘important’ junket Thorkelson
discussed a meeting w government MLA who was also against rural ridings
losing a seat in redistribution – Briglio
added we should be able to get support locally (Port Ed, SQCRD, etc) but also
appeal to many other rural areas --- and ask for an ‘emergency’ resolution to
be discussed at UBCM --- Doug Jay pointed out was the concern ‘Northern or
‘Rural’ (Kootenays lost a seat in redistribution) See
Vancouver Sun
article (accessed 28/8/2007)
for background – 15% rural 85% urban(population) – and vice versa for area |

Pond to be absent (physically)
|
|
While
the mayor stepped in a couple of times to unravel some bogged down
discussions – he did not seem to be mentally engaged in meeting --- perhaps
his imminent vacation? I
felt he at times tried to manoeuvre fast track
for Casino booze – but wisely deferred to rest of Council who wanted more
time to consider |
