Meeting thanked Jim Bruce for filling in – he was originally asked to come up from his Richmond retirement for a couple of months as a favour to Gordie Howie (with whom he had previously worked in Richmond) – and 18 months later and numerous commutes later Jim Bruce again gets to enjoy his retirement (and all his frequent flyer points too?) |

There were
no changes to budget—all the public input was in a sense a formality – from Council
perspective too few people showed up – one might argue Citizenry was showing
‘good sense’ – as budget presented too late in game for any tampering with |
Council long
winded about accepting a given |
|
My previous looks at PR budget ---Here is preliminary overview Public input to

He
did give a short discussion where mentioned provincial site had all the
different ‘municipalities’ listed as to total taxes etc Here is the site
– 2006 data last given |
|
|
Below
I have sorted the 2006 data for both Cities and then by Total taxes as
comparison w 2006 and Prince Rupert’s ‘peer’ group --- note I would have to
insert population etc to make more meaningful ---- Rupert is 15th
of the 33 listed ‘Cities’ in total
property taxes & charges in 2006 |

Tax Rates
bylaw was given 1st, 2nd, 3rd readings – it
is in the form above but is meaningless without more information – according to
Jim Bruce at the meeting the relative relationships will remain – with the
provisio that only Residential and ‘Business’ are flexible—the province has
set rates for ‘Utility’ (read CN RR, PNG, etc) and the Port facilities have
been capped (with province sending 1.5M$ to city to cover differences) –
there is little light industry and no major industry that is not capped etc –
leaving Residential and business to absorb any increases |
|
Here
I have put Port Edward too --- As one speaker at ‘public input session’ asked
why I would not move to Port Ed? --- Note the, library, Ferry, Swimming Pool,
Recreation center, and PAC are used by regional residents (Port Ed, to Dodge
Cove to Metlakatla etc but paid for by City Taxpayers etc |
|
After
the meeting barry was explaining how he saw a local electrical company with
aerial lift being employed to change city street lamps light bulbs --- thus
say 200$ paid to a private company to change a few light bulbs This
can be read both ways—Previous cutbacks at city makes unable to do it – or
just poor planning --- or City no longer has person with electrical ticket to
do this kind of maintenance etc --- life is complicated but only when
citizenry takes an interest will these things be sorted out --- or we can
just rely upon a few City Councillors to look out for our best interests
while we ‘sleep’ |
