Critique below But as you go thru
these results remember that the samples were too small to be taken seriously
as averages (<30)--- still there might be some worth here too --
I have placed the full ‘scores’ at end file |
|
You wouldn’t
blame the doctors for having the highest rate of diabetes in province here –
so why blame the schools/ teachers for low scores?—(I have paraphrased a
speaker from audience) Background – see my
poverty report for PR; and the EDI school report ‘at risk’ |
When you realize Prince Rupert
area is poorest in BC you would predict lowest scores
|
|
While it is
hard to judge how true this is for say Vancouver schools we can look at local
results and see they rank as do the socio-economics of the surrounding
neighbourhoods --- better off areas scored higher in the school results etc
---- Cowley knew this too but maintained a better predictor was the parent’s
education level – rather than income --- true – one expects kids whose
parents were star basketball players to have good athletic kids |
How valid are
comparisons between schools?

CRITIQUEHere is an
excellent Critique of
Fraser Institute Report Cards from Tyee done in 2003 --- Fraser Institute Propaganda
Message: Private
schools do a better job teaching: thus privatize all/ most schools Parents
‘choose’ --- thus are Consumers not Citizens Hidden
agenda: poor ethnic and handicapped should be segregated from WASP families
even more than housing markets are able to Rich/ better
off should be subsidized by poor --- tax$ siphoned off to pay for their
exclusivity |
ESL &
‘special needs’ |
|
As
the table above shows --- schools that have non-standard populations (English
as second language—or ‘special needs (but gifted is a ‘special needs’ too) –
tend not to score well on these standardized tests --- Big surprise So
if Annunciation would allow poor ESL and special needs students in as
‘Affirmative Action’ (scholarship) one could expect a more usable comparison
of data |

(I had to
convert files so some mistakes could have happened – check with originals |
