Peggy Davenport of Volunteer Connections put the idea to Council

 

In Recognition of

 

Peter Lester’s 36 years as Mayor but also all the unsung volunteering Mary Lester did over the years

Peter came to Canada in 1939 from US to enlist

In 1946 settled in PR

Dec 1957: Union president at pulp mill, during a strike he was elected Mayor for 1st of his 17 continuous terms

Strategy: secure tax base – then build  Amenities

Extended municipal boundaries in 1965 to include the pulp mill and 20 years later extended to include Ridley

 

City Council was then able to spend more money on such amenities for the people as recreational and cultural facilities and parks.  These included the Jim Cicconi Civic Center, the Earl Mah Swimming Pool, and the Prince Rupert Performing Arts Center
