Dec 15th Meeting—Elections

AND (Million$ checks) see below

Tele-conferencing with 3 ‘stormed in’ Board members on QCIs slowed down voting process – especially when first vote tied at 5-5

High-light of meeting was Skidegate ‘world class’ destination funding debate

Pages re-elected after tie vote; & Briglio vice (chair)

And Humor:-- these are friendly meetings with fair amount of banter – so when MacKenzie asked if she wished to make a speech – someone quipped ‘better go to attack-ad mode’

Voting

Board members Barry Pages (Masset) and Christine MacKenzie (Port Edward) were tied 5 to 5 after first round of voting; a second vote had Pages winning 6-4.

Analysis: perhaps there was a wish to bring the chair to the mainland so more accessible to staff etc--- PR would be unacceptable as chair to smaller populations and thus Port Ed as next best bet--- what-ever the tie and then 6-4 vote means one person changed mind

In Vice-chair both nominees were from mainland; Tony Briglio (Prince Rupert) and again Christine MacKenzie.

As in previous the vote went 6-4 against Christine

Skidegate as ‘World Class destination’ for Tourism

In some ways that the topic passed through SQCRD meeting was a formality --- Northern Trust regional funding was being sought for 2million dollars (of 26M$ total). The Regional board had listened to the proposal and endorsed it; but Regional District approval needed too. Once it was given, since this is a cross-regional pot of 50M$, now the Prince George regional NTI must approve

The argument presented was the Skidegate site should draw tourists along Highway 16 corridor – thus benefiting not only QCI and mainland but with positive effects even to Prince George etc

Unlike PR City Council SQCRD is ‘transparent’ thus ‘checks over 5T$ routinely put in agenda package

Looking at the cashed checks

November 28th check for $4,666.875 to Masset

Turns out all borrowing goes thru SQCRD – and this is for the new Hospital at Masset

Ditto the $525,637.50 check from MFA to PR – which turns out to be the $ borrowed to repair bridge across Morse Crk on 2nd Avenue
