Council Meeting

October 15, 2002

Hawk Air spokesperson Ann Jackson wanted to set the record straight so she spoke in Question Period

They (the city) came to us and said “you want to save 50T dollars?” – Sure but what is the deal?

In question period Mayor Scott said the total ‘subsidy” (which got a laugh from Herb Pond) was only about 60T$ bringing the total ‘deficit’ of Airport Ferry to only 675T$ predicted.

Council Hopefuls were in attendance

 Containerization was on agenda

How much did the City Subsidize
the airport ferry over past few years??

Average over 3 years:
$797,598

2001 actual

2000 actual

1999 actual

(614,563)

(1,159,887)

(618,345)

Taken from Financial Statements

Contrast this with the City Bus system

(Total cost only 695T$ (March11 2002 report) before BC Transit subsidy & user fares subtracted)

City bus fares (last meeting) were increased 25% to cover a mere 14T$ shortfall
This is class politics at its crassest – the poorer people in PR  pay
while “everyone” helps the richer segments of society
to not have to carry their own baggage to airport

Eleanor Taylor of Northern Health Authority wants City Council to research writing a Clean Air Bylaw. Local bars have 2 establishments complying with ventilated smoking rooms; 7 in process and 4 ignoring; while most restauarants compling

Fire & RCMP reports

The ‘safe’ Halloween program was again approved with only Paddy Greene wondering about saving a few $$

Don Allan: “I want $$”

The “possibility of up to 500 jobs over 5-10 years” in ‘cruise ship traffic’ --- getting ready cost City only 5T$ while

Containerization project cost 35T$ as it’s share.

Councilors Cyril & Paddy were especially animated tonight—I suspect both realize they might not be around much longer. Stevens showed potential – but after 3 years he should have “starred” sooner

Paddy asks some good questions, but he too has a track record that is not re-election material.

Too bad Kennedy did not run for mayor. Several times he took the diplomatic high ground and was showing real leadership. Bedard was not present. Sue Rowse too had a good evening – having wisely chosen not to run – the pressure was off.
